STRENGTHEN OUR NATURE LAWS TO PROTECT AUSSIE WILDLIFE
New reforms are a win for nature, but the work doesn’t stop here. By adding your voice, you’ll be sending a message to your local member of parliament and the Minister for the Environment and Water of Australia, calling on them to deliver strong National Environmental Standards that lock in real protections for wildlife, forests, and the Reef.
November 2025 update:
Nature now has a fighting chance.
Big win for nature – thanks to you. Decades in the making, Australia’s nature laws are changing for the better. These reforms will close destructive loopholes, protect critical habitats, and hold industries accountable.
Thanks to your voice and thousands of others, nature now has a fighting chance.
Your voice made a difference.
New nature laws will: • Close deforestation and native forest logging loopholes • Protect waterways in the Great Barrier Reef catchment • Stop fast-tracking for coal and gas projects • Apply standards and other rules to protect nature from development • Create a national EPA to enforce the rules Stronger laws mean stronger protections - for wildlife, forests, and the Reef. Over 2,000 threatened species and old-growth forests are safer, waterways in the Great Barrier Reef catchment are shielded from sediment and pollution, and a new national EPA will enforce the rules and stop harmful projects. These reforms are a major step forward, but the work doesn’t stop here. Now we need to keep the momentum going to deliver strong National Environmental Standards that lock in real protections for wildlife, forests, and the Reef.

Land clearing loopholes closed
Forests in Reef catchments are nature’s guardians. They hold soil in place, slow down water, and help keep the Reef’s waters clean. But when these forests are cleared, mud and pollution rush downstream—smothering coral, choking seagrass, and threatening the marine life that call the Great Barrier Reef home.
Deforestation in areas that drain into the Reef is putting one of the world’s most precious ecosystems at risk.
Improved nature laws mean that land clearing loopholes are closed immediately, reducing habitat loss and protecting waterways in sensitive areas like the Great Barrier Reef catchment. A win for nature, but there is more to do. Now we need to keep the momentum going to deliver strong National Environmental Standards that lock in real protections for wildlife, forests, and the Reef.
Greater gliders, koalas and over 2,000 threatened species now have a fighting chance
From July 2027, logging agreements in native forests will no longer be exempt from national environmental laws. All logging operations must meet strict standards, and a new national EPA will have the power to stop non-compliant logging.
This means better protection for threatened species habitats and old-growth forests that that Australia’s precious threatened species, like the koala and greater glider call home.
We must protect nature to protect our future.
Q&A: Reforming Australia's Nature Laws - Explained
Australia’s nature laws are falling short. From deforestation loopholes to habitat destruction, our current laws are failing iconic species like the greater glider, and further damaging the Great Barrier Reef.
This blog breaks down 10 key questions to help you understand what’s going wrong, why it matters, and what needs to change to protect nature and secure a better future.
