Christmas and the holiday is a time to kick back and relax with friends, family and enjoy good food. And for many Aussies that means seafood.
But how can you make sure that the seafood you’re buying for your festive feast has been sourced or farmed in a way that’s sustainable?
In the rush to get the best last minute prawns, salmon and oysters, it can be hard to figure out if the seafood you’re buying is going to mean more or less bounty from the oceans in the future.
Because unfortunately, growing demand for seafood is putting pressure on fish stocks globally. In Australia, around 70% of the seafood consumed is imported, so it can be very hard to know that what you’re taking home has been farmed or caught responsibly.
But that doesn’t mean you need to skip out on your favourite Christmas dishes. It simply means learning more about where and how the food you purchase at your local markets have been sourced. There are always sustainable options that you can go for, and if in doubt, just ask!
