WWF WELCOMES COMMITMENT TO STRONGER REGULATION IN SALMON INDUSTRY BUT AWAITS MORE DETAIL

WWF-Australia is pleased to see the Tasmanian Government committing to stronger regulation and transparency in the salmon farming industry with the announcement of its 10-year Salmon Plan. However the scale of transformation that can be achieved will depend on the details that follow.

We look forward to seeing more details on the plan and in particular, the strength and focus of the regulatory framework, to understand how Tasmania’s marine environment will be better protected.

The cumulative impacts of multiple salmon farming operations in enclosed waterways, such as Macquarie Harbour, need to be addressed through regulatory reform and standards that take an entire ecosystem into consideration.

To ensure effective and durable outcomes, the development of the 10-year Salmon Plan must involve proper consultation with all stakeholders, including scientists, aquaculture companies, certification schemes, retailers, conservationists, and local communities.

WWF-Australia believes that all stakeholders must work together to ensure that planning and management of the Tasmanian aquaculture industry operates in harmony with nature and with the many other users of Tasmania’s unique coast and marine environment.
