Wherever they operate, businesses have an impact on the environment. As our natural resources continue to diminish and our carbon emissions climb, we're learning that many traditional production practices are not sustainable, and often contribute to global environmental challenges.


As a strategic partner, WWF helps some companies to engage with their staff, customers and stakeholders to protect the natural habitats and agricultural landscapes where they, and their supply chains, have an impact.

How we work

WWF works in partnership with businesses and industry organisations to reach solutions that work for business, the environment and the community. As with any relationship, we do not always agree with our partners. However, working with openness, using evidence to inform decisions, and by sharing a sense of mutual purpose, we are able to achieve great things for the future.

Large companies are pivotal to the Australian economy. They provide livelihoods and opportunities to generate economic well-being, as well as the goods and services that we use every day.

However, these companies rely heavily upon natural resources either directly (as in the production and sale of food) or indirectly (for power, water and buildings). How boards and directors manage their businesses can have a huge impact on the health of the environment.

WWF works in partnership with businesses involved in food production, distribution and sale to generate large-scale shifts to more sustainable practices. Food sustainability faces three broad pressures – rapidly increasing demand for food, the impacts of industrialisation on agricultural land, and the emerging and unpredictable threats of climate change.

Unchecked, these pressures will result in a global food crisis. Natural resources will be depleted and the environments used to produce our food will be irreparably damaged.

WWF works with visionary companies to do business differently. These changes often reach far back into the company's supply chain, transforming the operations of producers, distributors and retailers, too. By sharing their motivations and successes with their consumers, these progressive companies also raise awareness of food sustainability issues and potential solutions within the broader community.

To tackle environmental challenges such as food sustainability, businesses globally must do better. WWF is showing them how.

Businesses also demonstrate their support for WWF's vital work and the local communities we serve in direct ways. Philanthropic contributions from our business partners support specific conservation initiatives across the country, including stopping excessive landclearing to protect critical species like the Koala, improvements to water quality in sugar cane-growing regions, protection for the Great Barrier Reef, and efforts to rid our oceans of ghost nets.

Sponsored projects not only demonstrate a company's green credentials; they promote environmental awareness and responsible environmental practice among that company's customers, employees and other stakeholders.

Engaging with Government

WWF-Australia works collaboratively with a number of international development organisations. These relationships extend our reach and recognise that poverty and the environment are inextricably linked.

WWF-Australia has worked with Australian Aid, the Australian Government’s overseas aid program managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), to address the environmental concerns of the world's poorest people and promote environmental sustainability. Along with a large number of other NGOs (including Oxfam and World Vision) we are also partners in the Campaign for Australian Aid which seeks to break the cycle of poverty and inequality by helping less fortunate communities build a better and fairer future.

We also participate in AVID (Australian Volunteers for International Development) Program to help strengthen mutual understanding between Australia and other countries, and to make a positive contribution to international development.
