WWF welcomes Labor's climate change policy

Labor's commitment to sign the Kyoto Protocol and aim for a 60 per cent cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 has been welcomed as an important part of the solution to climate change by WWF, the global conservation group.

"Ratifying the Kyoto Protocol is a step towards addressing the massive problems associated with climate change, as is the setting of 60 per cent greenhouse gas cuts by 2050," says WWF-Australia CEO Greg Bourne.

The Australian Government's mandatory renewable energy target (MRET) requires only one per cent of electricity to be sourced from renewable energy sources. Labor has indicated it wants five per cent of Australia's energy provided by clean energy sources.

WWF believes at least ten per cent of our energy should be sourced from renewable energy supplies.

"A ten per cent commitment is not radical but it is essential - unleashing Australia's entrepreneurial spirit and providing more jobs in our cities and in the bush should be part of any solutions package. Boosting our investment in clean energy will result in this," says Mr Bourne.

"Australians want leaders who are driving solutions to the climate crisis. They want to be part of the massive opportunities being created to help avert the worst of climate change."
