Sydney's top restaurateurs commit to Earth Hour

Sydney's top restaurateurs have committed to Earth Hour and called on all Sydney-siders to join them in turning off the lights for one hour on March 31, at 7.30pm.

With the support of The City of Sydney, the NSW Government and over 60 major companies, Earth Hour, will be the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions by 5 per cent in 2007.

Earth Hour is about simple changes that will collectively make the 5 per cent difference - from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.

Adele Perry, who rallied Sydney's top restaurateurs to back Earth Hour, said: "The Earth Hour initiative is the beginning of something much bigger. There is definitely a movement starting and it is going to change the way we live so that we can ensure the future for our children.

"It is our responsibility - this is an awakening to how we can all contribute and make a difference working together to save the planet," she said.

WWF-Australia spokesperson, Andy Ridley said: "Sydney is known across the world for its ability to make things happen - from the 2000 Olympics to its New Year celebrations. Here we have some of the people that make Sydney an amazing place and are now going to help us make Earth Hour happen."

"If we prove that together we can significantly cut our greenhouse gas pollution it will send a message to every city around the world that we have the power to take action against global warming," he said.
