QUEENSLAND TREE PROTECTION LEGISLATION BLOCKED

Out of control tree-clearing in Queensland is set to continue, after important legislation was blocked in state parliament tonight.

The new laws were an election commitment of the Palaszczuk Government, and were one of the key promises made to the World Heritage Committee last year to keep the Reef off the in danger list.

“With more than one tree bulldozed every second in Queensland, we’re shocked that this legislation would be blocked,” WWF-Australia Conservation Scientist Dr Martin Taylor said.

“Tree-clearing is out of control in Queensland. If we want to save the Reef and stop the decline of native forest wildlife like koalas we cannot continue to destroy trees at such an alarming rate.”

“Tonight’s vote means Australia is yet to fulfil the promise we made to the international community, to protect the Reef from water pollution caused by tree-clearing."

“We acknowledge the strong efforts of the Queensland Government to fulfil their commitments to the Queensland public and the world."

“WWF will continue to work with the Queensland and Australian Governments to protect trees and koala habitat, and ensure the Reef’s World Heritage status is preserved."
