REVIEW INTO QUEENSLAND FISHERIES WELCOME

WWF today welcomed the Queensland Government’s release of its independent report into the state’s fisheries, which recommends significant long-term changes to the way Queensland’s fisheries are managed.

The report was prepared by MRAG Asia Pacific and makes 80 recommendations to address a broad range of issues with the current antiquated management system.

“The detailed review will take some time to consider but we strongly support the adoption of a more modern framework for the management of Queensland fisheries,” said WWF-Australia’s Policy Manager for Great Barrier Reef Fisheries, Jim Higgs.

Some of the recommendations include clearer policy guidelines for future management arrangements, the use of electronic vessel tracking systems, and better information and reporting, such as through the re-introduction of an independent fisheries observer program to monitor fishing activities. 

“We applaud both the previous and current state governments for initiating the review and for acknowledging its value by continuing the process,” Mr Higgs said.  

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Queenslanders to now have their say in the management of their fisheries. We shouldn’t let this slip away.”
