'Weather makers' must lead: reduce personal carbon emissions by 70%
26 Sep 2005
WWF is calling on individuals to stop waiting for the government to make the changes necessary to halt dangerous climate change and to lead the way in reducing carbon emissions.
As outlined in Dr Tim Flannery's new groundbreaking book, The Weather Makers, we are now creating our own weather - with frightening consequences.
By taking a lead in tackling climate change, a 70% reduction in household carbon emissions can be achieved both quickly and easily without any significant changes to lifestyle, the global conservation organisation says.
If business and industry follow this lead by reducing their emissions we can stop Australia's contribution to climate change.
"The government continues to stall on taking the urgent steps needed to address the biggest threat to the people of Australia. It now falls on the individuals of this country to take action," says WWF-Australia CEO Greg Bourne.
"Everyone has the right and responsibility to reduce their personal impact on the planet and insist that governments and big business reduce theirs too, especially when every one of us will have to pick up the costs of increased droughts, massive storms, damaged infrastructure and crop failures."
Each Australian can make a 70 per cent reduction in carbon emissions in just a few months. With the weather we are now making, we've got no time to lose.
