Premier turns up heat on climate change debate
06 Sep 2004
Premier Bob Carr steps right into the middle of the Climate Change issue tonight, moderating a far reaching debate at the Powerhouse Museum.
Some of the world's experts in power and climate change will take part in the debate which is discussing the topic, "Can the power sector save us from climate change?"
It comes just a day before the Federal Labor Party releases its National Energy Policy in response to Prime Minister John Howard's Energy White Paper.
The debate is extremely timely, coming right in the middle of the World Energy Congress which is held every 4 years (this year it is in Sydney) with the world's largest energy companies taking part.
The debate panel includes:
- Glenn Cannon, Former Chairman, American Public Power Association
- Linda Funnell, Milner, Group Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, National Australia Bank
- Khalid Rahman, Deputy Director General, Regional and Sustainable Development Department, Asian Development Bank
- Liam Salter, Asia Pacific Climate Change Campaign, WWF
- Dr Robert Schock, Chair World Energy Council Study Group on Energy Technologies for the 21st Century.
The debate will be attended by 300 Australian and international energy executives and policy makers.
The organiser of the debate, WWF-Australia, is extending the challenge for greenhouse gas emissions to be cut by 60 per cent by the 2050. WWF believes unless deep cuts are made to emissions, the temperature will rise and Australia will feel the brunt of more droughts, freak storms and bushfires.
Media is welcome to attend the debate.
