In the lead up to Earth Hour this Saturday, domain.com.au today launched an easy guide to saving energy in the home. Earth Hour invites all Sydney households and businesses to turn off their lights for an hour at 7.30pm this Saturday. The domain.com.au guide - at http://www.domain.com.au/earthhour - shows how consumers can make an impact long after the lights come back on.

The guide features an interactive floor plan of a home and demonstrates how visitors can reduce emissions, avoid wasting electricity and save on their energy bills.

"With climate change an issue affecting all Australians, domain.com.au wanted to take the initiative and show Australians how they can have a real impact on our environment," Sam Plowman, general manager, domain.com.au said.

"Around 65% of household greenhouse gas emissions come from the use of electricity for the home. This is an important cause and, as one of Australia's leading property websites, we are pleased to be able to help spread the word about how easy it is to save energy in the home."

The interactive home features five of the average home's main rooms - the kitchen, laundry, bathroom and living room and study. In each room, visitors click on particular furniture and appliances and are given information on how much energy is consumed and what can be done to reduce this.

For example, a front loading washing machine is more energy efficient than top-loaders; as the fridge is the most energy hungry appliance in the home, make sure it is always set to an optimum temperature; if you have a dual-flush toilet, make sure you use the short flush when appropriate.

"Many people want to help with climate change but often don't know where to start. domain.com.au's Earth Hour website shows them that even little things they can do in their home can make a huge difference," Mr. Plowman said.

The Earth Hour environmental initiative, a partnership between WWF-Australia and Fairfax Media, is encouraging Sydney businesses and residents to switch their lights off for an hour at 7.30pm on Saturday 31, March. Its goal is to reduce Sydney's greenhouse gas emissions by 5% in 2007.

The domain.com.au Earth Hour feature will stay live after the Earth Hour environmental initiative takes place continuing their commitment to educating Australians on how to save energy in the home.
