CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT TRAVEL

Transport – whether by car, bus, motorbike or plane – accounts for about 16% of Australia’s annual greenhouse emissions and about 34% of total household greenhouse gas emissions. Our growing car use and air travel, in particular, is contributing to global warming.

To achieve our goal of net-zero carbon pollution before 2050, governments, councils, and households need to make smarter travel decisions. We need to create more liveable cities by providing more public transport, a greater number of safer bike and walking and support and incentivise electric vehicles and high-speed rail. Employers can play their part by increasing their use of video conferencing and provide more flexible work-from-home options. Not only will these measures help to reduce carbon pollution; they will improve air quality, our health and, ultimately, lead to improving our everyday lives. So what can we as individuals do? Lots.

Here are some other tips to get you moving:

Firstly, we can:

  • change the way we think about transport and make our travel plans ahead of time
  • Reduce air travel where you can
  • Drive less, and opt for public transport, walking, cycling or carpooling instead
  • If you must drive, then consider a hybrid electric vehicle or offsetting your emissions. It might even save you money.
