Categories - Photographic

Each photograph entered in the Competition must be taken in Australia and fall into one of the three categories listed below.

Category 1: Australian Wildlife

We are looking for images that capture Australia's stunning and unique wildlife. Images showing species in their natural habitat as opposed to captivity will be judged preferably. Birds, reptiles, mammals, insects; if it occurs in Australia, we want to see your photographs of it. We're looking for wildlife behaviour too, animals doing what they do when they think no-one is looking. Birds in flight, kangaroos hopping, fish jumping, be creative!

Category 2: Australian Landscapes

This is a country of dramatic landscapes, open spaces, rainforests, rivers, sand plains and even city skylines. We want to see your photos that capture the magic of Australia. Wetlands, beaches - the lot. We want striking images that scream out “Australia”. This can include underwater scenes too.

Category 3: A Changing Land

As Australia's population is growing, our natural landscape is constantly being altered. Can you capture this in an image? A picture tells 1,000 words. We are looking for images that tell a story about how our land uses have affected this country or how landscapes are changing - in some cases changing permanently. Examples of changing landscapes are dried riverbeds or perhaps even irrigators at work in a field. How do we use the land and sea today? How did it look yesteryear compared to now, and can you capture that in one image?

So that our youngest entrants aren't competing with the eldest, those aged 12-15 (Group A) will be grouped together, entrants aged 16-18 (Group B) will also be grouped together. The categories are the same for both. The winner of each category in each group will receive a prize.

Finalists

The judges will select 12 photographic finalists by October 22.

Photographic finalists will be contacted by phone, email or post prior to October 22 and must send high resolution versions of their images to WWF-Australia for printing. These should be uploaded via the same mechanism as used when entering the competition. Images should be minimum size of 3072 x 2048 pixels. Images must be received by midnight October 27. If they are not received by this date, the entrant will be disqualified.

The Prize

There will be one ultimate photographic winner selected by the judges from the 12 finalists on November 1st. The winner will win a trip for two to Borneo and be invited to attend an expenses paid black tie event at Sydney's Opera House on November 13th. Finalist's images will be on display at the event Individual category winners will also be awarded prizes courtesy of Canon.

Judges

The judges' decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Essay Question

There is only one essay question:

Q. Describe what has happened in the Australian environment over the past 30 years.

Imagine you are the CEO of a major Australian conservation organisation in the year 2038. You have an opportunity to send a letter back into the past, 30 years into the past, and inform your own conservation organisation about the state of the Australian environment in the future. Using real and current environmental issues, describe what has happened over the past 30 years in Australia. In your letter you should explore the responsibilities of rural communities, business, industry and agriculture. You should provide advice on what logical steps that can be taken to avoid these threats becoming a reality. (1500 words)

So that our youngest entrants aren't competing with the eldest, those aged 12-15 (Group A) will be grouped together, entrants aged 16-18 (Group B) will also be grouped together. The question is the same for both. The winner of each group will receive a prize.
